The name
of 'Saman' was adopted from a famous Acehnese Ulama, Syeh Saman. The Arabic,
Acehnese, and Gayonese language are used in this dance. Previously, this dance
was performed to celebrate some cultural events in the Acehnese community, such
as to celebrate Prophet Muhammad birthday.

Usually
there is no musical instruments used in this dance, the dancers use their
clapping hands combine with beating their chest and thighs to synchronize their
body movement to all sectors. Syeh is the leader of this team, Syeh will manage
everything, such as formation and timing, that is why all dancers will need
concentration and a serious training regularly. Usually male perform this dance
but there is no harm if female do it. Since 2011, the Saman Dance was decided
as Representative List of the Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage of
Humanity by UNESCO.
